Sustainability at Croydon West Primary School

Follow the sustainable journey of our small school, Croydon West Primary School. We believe in providing learning opportunities through which our students can connect with nature, investigate environmental issues and develop a sense of wonder and enthusiasm for our planet.

Sensory Garden

Playing, exploring and learning in our Sensory Garden  is a  very enjoyable experience which engages the senses of our students. Plantings include a range of amazing scented plants wih a lavender spiral leading into the centre. Textured plants invite our students to touch and discover while a forest of bamboo creates a subtle sound when the wind blows. A crunchy gravel path completes this area which also encourages students to use their eyes to find out about leaf structures, flowers and beautiful insect and spider inhabitants.

Lambs Ears (Stachys Byzantia) is a favourite plant due to its soft, furry texture. The children have grown cuttings of this plant and we have planted it in other parts of our school gardens.

This plant is called Strobilanthes gossypinus and has stunning foliage. It is quite drought tolerant and is a fabulous textural plant in our  Sensory Garden.
